What to Actually Order Out

Eating out well in Kensington & Chelsea: how to choose, not restrict.

What should you order at a café to feel good afterwards?

The simplest framework for ordering well when you're out: look for protein, some colour, and something green, and then stop second-guessing it. That combination keeps you steady through the afternoon far better than a virtuous-sounding bowl that's mostly grain and dressing. It works at a quick lunch counter on Kensington High Street, it works at a sit-down spot, and it works when you're ordering for the table.

The idea isn't to restrict what you choose, it's to have a quiet anchor so you're not making the decision from scratch every time. When you're tired, rushed, or just trying to get through a lunch meeting, a loose framework does the thinking for you.

What that looks like in practice: a piece of fish or chicken, a handful of leaves or roasted veg, maybe a soft-boiled egg or some hummus on the side. If there's bread on the table and you want it, have it. The point is to build the plate around something sustaining first, not to negotiate every element.

One thing worth saying: a meal out is still a meal out. If the thing on the menu that sounds best doesn't tick every box, order it anyway. Eating with pleasure counts for a lot.

The move: 20 minutes, no kit. Turn one call into a walk

Walking while you talk removes the friction entirely. There's no extra slot to find in the day, and the movement happens almost without noticing.

  • 01Pick one call this week (a catch-up, a work check-in, anything that doesn't need a screen) and take it outside.
  • 02Put your headphones in before you dial, and start walking as the call connects. No route needed, just move.
  • 03Aim for 20 minutes, but even 10 counts. The point is that it happens, not that it's perfect.
  • 04Notice how you feel when you hang up versus when you've been sitting at a desk for the same conversation.

The good café order, made at home

This is less a recipe and more a reminder that the formula works just as well in your own kitchen: protein, colour, something green. Here it's a quick assembly rather than a cook.

  • ·2 eggs, soft-boiled (7 minutes)
  • ·A large handful of rocket or watercress
  • ·Half an avocado, sliced
  • ·A few cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ·A spoonful of hummus
  • ·Olive oil, lemon, a pinch of flaky salt

The shortcut: The eggs can be boiled the night before and kept in their shells in the fridge. The whole plate comes together in under 3 minutes the next day.

Where we eat

Urban Greens - Kensington, Kensington High Street

Urban Greens, on Kensington High Street, is where the protein-colour-green idea takes almost no thought. The salad bowls are properly filling, with real protein options (tempeh, tofu, chickpeas) so you leave fed rather than hungry again an hour later. It's grab-and-go, so this is the quick-lunch version of eating out rather than the long, sit-down one. Handy when you're between things, and only a short walk from the studio. Pick a bowl, make sure there's a protein in it, and get on with your afternoon.

The note

A short walk after lunch (even ten minutes around the block) does something quiet and useful for the rest of the afternoon. Not a workout, not a step-count exercise. Just movement that interrupts the sit-down-straight-back-to-the-desk pattern most of us default to. It's one of those small things that costs nothing and consistently earns its keep.

Good to know

What should I order at a café to feel good afterwards?
Look for something with protein, a bit of colour, and something green: a piece of fish or chicken, some roasted veg, a salad with eggs or legumes. Build the plate around something sustaining and the rest takes care of itself.
How do I eat well when I'm out without being restrictive about it?
Go in with a loose anchor (protein, colour, something green) rather than a list of rules. It gives you a starting point without turning every lunch into a negotiation.
Is there a simple way to order well at cafés in Kensington & Chelsea?
Most good cafés in Kensington & Chelsea carry the building blocks without any effort on your part: eggs, avocado, smoked salmon, leafy salads. The framework works almost anywhere. You're just choosing which version of it appeals that day.
